Do you enjoy eating rice or other starchy foods? Then you might be interested in this simple cooking method that will cut the calories of rice by half.
This method is easy and can be done with things that you already have in your kitchen.
The method: add a teaspoon of healthy oil, olive or coconut oil, to cooking water for every one half cup of uncooked rice. In other words, use 1 cup of water per every 1/2 cup on uncooked rice and cook the rice as you normally do. Then, put it in the fridge for at least 12 hours. The rice will have its usual taste, but it will have fewer calories.
Furthermore, rice that is cooked this way has at least 10 times resistant starch as normally prepared rice would have and 10 –15% less calories. According to researchers, this method can even cut 50 – 60% of the calories of certain kinds of rice. And the calorie count will not change when you reheat the rice.
How does this method reduce calories?
The fat from the oil, together with the cooling process, increases the amount of resistant starch in rice. The resistant starch (RS) is an indigestible form of carbohydrates that the small intestine cannot convert to glucose and break down.
This cooking method may also work for other starchy foods such as beans, pasta, oatmeal, cereals and potatoes. Resistant starch is not only good for cutting calories, but it has also been linked to better digestion, improved insulin sensitivity, gut function, increased fat burn and a feeling of fullness.
