The sustainable off-the-grid home from Rosie is not an average cabin in the woods.
Located on 23-acres of land in a privately-owned reserve in Coromandel, New Zealand, it is made out of five 20-foot shipping containers.
Rosie named her personal paradise Ahurewa, which means “sacred place”.
Note that “sacred” is an understatement here: this lucky woman lives surrounded by nature without another home in sight. She could never get much more remote or tranquil than this!
She specifically positioned the cabin to have a perfect view of both sunrise and sunset every single day.
The goal of this woman when she was building her home was to live as sustainably as possible, with full respect for the nature she is now surrounded with.
She achieved this by building a vermicomposting toilet, 12 solar panels in a 4kW system for electricity, and two 2,500 L water tanks that direct water waste to the composting toilets for second use there.
Rosie has a natural garden where she allows native plants to thrive, and plants both, medicinal and edible plants. In the case of days without too much sun, she owns backup batteries and a power inverter.
In case the main stove runs out of power, she has a backup stove, as well as a charming tiny fireplace that serves as a whole-home heater.
She has a spacious kitchen, a beautiful bathroom, and a large bedroom, with a king-size bed and a stunning view.
In nearly every room, there are floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow plenty of natural light and help her get the maximum benefit from the gorgeous views.
There is also a cozy library for reading, and a gorgeous patio space constructed out front.
Rosie has a lovely backyard, and a garden space out back perfect for relaxing in. Even on the chillier nights, there is a heater so that she can enjoy the outdoor space.
